When creative companies turn their culture into innovation

For fifteen years the “Feira Cultural Preta” (Black Fair) has been getting together experiences of entrepreneurs and creative companies in the city of São Paulo. The celebration edition attended by more than 120 thousand participants, 600 exhibitors from Brazil and Latin America and 500 national and international artists. In 2016, the event took place the first time in Rio de Janeiro, when celebrates the centenary of Samba, a musical style created by blacks and that became the cultural identity of the country, an immaterial heritage of humanity. The 15th edition of the Feira Preta provided the circulation of more than 3 million reais and for the second time, was supported by SITAWI Finance for good through the social and environmental loan mechanism.

The traditional edition of São Paulo featured shows, visual arts, dance, as well as a fair with fashion items, accessories, hair, gastronomy, among others. A lively, pulsating, dynamic event that became a remarkable reference to black community representation in Brazil, for strengthening population and for expressing the multiple artistic and cultural hues.

The Fair also brought dozens of entrepreneurs from several regions of the country interested in this market. Presenting to society what is being produced by and for the black community, encouraging the sustainable development of micro and small businesses, generating employment and income. This year’s edition took place for the first time at the PRO MAGNO Event Center, in Casa Verde, a neighborhood recognized as the cradle of black culture in São Paulo.

“The Feira Preta is much more than stands selling clothes or a gig of some renowned artist, it’s actually a socio-cultural promotion of the Afro community, as well as the empowerment of black women in society,” commented Gabi Scaff, Social Finance volunteer who accompanied the due diligence process for the realization of the social environmental loan.

For The First Time in The City of Rio de Janeiro

The carioca edition of Feira Preta carried out its traditional exhibition activities: the participation of Afro-entrepreneurs with the promotion and commercialization of products, divided into handicrafts, clothing, shoes, decoration objects, accessories, books, toys, handicrafts and food Afro Brazilian. And also, activities related to black cultural production in the areas of literature, plastic arts, photography, music, dance, fashion, cinema, entrepreneurship and public policy.

On November 26 and 27, the festival took place in the Rio Art Museum (MAR) and Praça Mauá, and gathered about 104 exhibitors, several networks and groups working on the segment in the State of Rio. In particular, Feira Crespa, Reafro, Odarah Bazar, Blackbom, among other collectives active in the theme of Afro-entrepreneurship. The participation of Afro-entrepreneurs with the dissemination and commercialization of products, divided between clothing, footwear, decoration objects, accessories, books, toys, handicrafts and Afro Brazilian food.

Exhibitors by Segments: Clothing, Footwear, Beauty and hair products, Organic products, gastronomy, toys and books with the participation of the three main black bookstores of Rio de Janeiro: Kitabu, Nandyala and Malê.

Black Codes Meeting 2016 Edition

As part of the exclusive program of the fifteen years of Feira Preta, it was held the 1st Edition of the “Black Codes Meeting”, a meeting with business leaders and advertising agencies sensitive to the issues of the new scenario of private social investment in Brazil and the approach of race in the communication of services and products in the country.

The Black Codes Festival brought together black artists and entrepreneurs who shared their ideas and best practices in the creative economy, integrating representatives of diverse artistic languages, such as music, film, photography, fine arts and dance. At the end of the presentations, a collaborative co-creation process between participants developed strategies of innovation and social and entrepreneurial inventiveness in the themes of black feminism, afro-consumption and hair transition.

In partnership with the Consulate General of the United States and Google, we brought the CEO of Burrell Communications, from Chicago (USA), Mcghee William Osse to bring new crosscutting views on racial diversity into four pillars: Communication, Private Social Investment, Value Chain And Human Resources. During his visit to Brazil, the specialist spoke at Google, Twitter, ECA USP, Zumbi dos Palmares University and Casa Mulheres do Brasil, led by businesswoman Luiza Trajano (Magazine Luiza). The tour has received more than 500 people interested in the subject of corporate diversity, from the areas of communication, advertising and marketing.

Afrolab Edition – SESCSP

Afrolab is an umbrella project of the Feira Preta institute and Pret@ Digital which comprises several initiatives that promote innovation in small and medium enterprises – including process innovation – of different sectors. From handcrafts to entertainment, from audiovisual activism to black and young entrepreneurship, from traditional communication to the development of digital applications and solutions, from graphite to digital art. In the round of conversation that took place at the SESC Research and Training Center, we gathered the representatives of three projects that created trends in black cultural production and shared with the public their creative processes, financing mechanisms, platform management, production process and relationship with their target audience. The event brought together more than 20 people.
