+Unidos Group – a partnership between the Brazil offices of US companies and the US Embassy through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) – launched two new English-focused language laboratories at UFPE – the Federal University of Pernambuco – and UFRGS – the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, aiming to reach more than 4,000 students this year. SITAWI Finance for Good is responsible for the financial management of the group’s activities in Brazil.
The new laboratories are part of the +Unidos Group initiative to support Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC) in Languages without Borders Program, investing in the acquisition of equipment, computers, software and servers for language teaching, preferably to students of University, as well as the possibility of TOELF exams applying for English language certification.
“We are very happy to see that with each new inauguration we take another step towards our goal of training 1 million students in the language” says Gilberto Peralta, president of + Unidos Group steering committee and GE CEO in Brazil. “We estimated a delivery of another 5 laboratories throughout 2017, which will double our current capacity and, no doubt, will bring very positive results for Brazilians that are entering in the labor market”
For Languages without Borders Program President at MEC, Denise Martins de Abreu e Lima, the partnership with +Unidos Group is extremely important for entire academic community. “The +Unidos Group initiative together with our Program only make us stronger. Besides being a differential for the internalization process of our Universities, it also brings more visibility to our program. The idea is to extend the partnership to reach the entire national territory, amplifying even more the number of beneficiated students”, comments Denise.
The laboratories are supported by English teachers and will be used for online activities, test application, as well as preparatory courses for language proficiency exams.
