New initiative aims to mitigate impacts of COVID-19 in the Amazon

The United States Agency for International Development – USAID, NPI Expand, the Partnership for the Amazon Platform (PPA) and SITAWI Finance for Good have united together to create an initiative that will help the fight against Covid-19 in Brazil. The new partnership “PPA Solidarity: Response to COVID-19 in the Amazon” seeks to leverage innovative and scalable solutions in emergency response to the pandemic in all states of the Amazon, especially in Amazonas and Pará.

With an initial investment of R$10.6 million from USAID and NPI Expand, the partnership also sought to leverage resources with private sector partners, such as Alcoa, Bank of America, Beraca, Cargill, Caterpillar, Hydro Sustainability Fund, Rio do Norte Mining, Suzano and Vale, who contributed about R$18.2 million for the shares.

Projects include distribution of food baskets and hygiene kits to over 16,000 families, risk communications campaigns on prevention to over 250,000 people, support for testing, providing ICU beds and rescuing small businesses from financial failure through R$1.5 million in low interest loans and financial advice.
